Art galleries in Mexico

The art Galleries in Mexico and the World is the physical space for art exhibitions, where critics and collectors gather, whether to analyze, admire or acquire the exhibited artworks. Hence, the art gallery is transformed as a mediator between artists and society.

The gallery’s role in the art market is essential, because even though the artists are the creators and, for that matter, the first ones to manifest the search for expressing reality, the gallery and art dealers are the ones who make art comprehensible and reachable. Also, even though the artist may be well prepared, it is impossible for them to take on the workload of producing, promoting and selling their artworks. It is crucial for the artist to work alongside an art gallery in order to increase their professional development and position inside the art market.

The art market has exponentially grown in the last few years and each day it becomes more interesting because it does not abide to the same criteria as other markets. The artwork has an aggregate value, an emotional and profound experience in its spectator, or purchaser, that surpasses the monetary value of the artwork. For this same reason, the art gallery is a particular business, because not only does it deal with a unique economic and emotional product, but also offers a service to society: the free exhibition of artworks in an adequate ambience and infrastructure.

The art Galleries in Mexico and the World is an agent of great dynamism in the cultural industry, complying with the important role of offering a guaranteed value in the artwork and artist it exhibits and represents; it’s an essential location for the artistic distribution.

Art galleries, as they are known today, have their origin in Paris in the 19th century, developing alongside the avant-garde as a rupture from the academy. During this time, art sales began to surge under the role of an intermediary, as did the art business and the collectors’ interest. It is at this moment that art dealers began to be recognized for their capacity in predicting art tendencies, in selecting the best artists and searching for the quality in discourse and technique. The first independent exhibition took place in 1874 in the studio of the French photographer, Nadar.

In Mexico, art history is greatly linked with the political environment in the country and, for that reason, the history of the art Galleries in Mexico too. In the 1930s there was a shortage of space for art exhibits, especially independent spaces, because those available spaces were controlled by the government. Artists had to be students of schools such as: San Carlos, ENAP or La Esmeralda. In order to have their works exhibited, these students had to adopt certain requirements that abide to the government’s ideals.

In response to this, a group of artists and cultural lovers saw the necessity of opening spaces and promoting the introduction of exhibitions centers that later on were known as the first galleries in Mexico. The pioneers of art galleries in Mexico were Alberto Misrachi, whose gallery still exists, the lithograph artists, Emilio Amero, and Galería de Arte Mexicano, who was one of the first and most affluent artists to live in Mexico City.

Today, Mexico can be considered as a power art market in Latin America, alongside other countries such as Colombia, Peru and Brazil, because each nation has a great deal of museums, galleries and cultural industries.

Art galleries in Mexico have contributed in an important manner to the economic and cultural growth of the country, because on the one side, they have taken the role of artistic managers, promoters and representatives that guide and construct the professional trajectory of their artists and, on the other side, have actively maintained the exchange and acknowledgement of consolidated artists or great representatives of the Mexican art scene.

Currently, art collectors are increasing in great numbers in Mexico. Firstly, around 2% of world millionaires live in Mexico and that number increases yearly. The accumulated wealth has fostered an environment to allow the formation of great art collectors, such as the Jumex Museum in Mexico City or FEMSA in Monterrey.

This, in turn, has attracted an international market that has incremented the demand and supply of art as well as the importance of art galleries in Mexico. As an example, 2012 was the year in which Mexico surpassed all other Latin American countries in art sales. This demand and supply finally depend on the subjectivity of the artists, the intermediaries and the buyers. An art gallery helps validate the artworks in this art value chain.

For more than 40 years, Aura Galerías has been known as one of the most exclusive art galleries in Mexico. Since our doors opened, it has been our mission to accomplish the role of promoters of the Mexican art scene. In our four decades of market presence, we have grown, hand in hand, with our artists by focusing on finding the best talent and quality available in the Mexican and Latin American art culture in order to position our represented artist in the national and international art market.

Currently, it is not viable for an artist to promote their own projects. The cultural industry is a value chain where the artist needs guidance and someone who can provide visibility of the art market, through complete solutions: exhibiting the artist artwork not only in the gallery, but also in collaboration with other museums and institutions; making national and international promotional campaigns to a target audience of critics, collectors and specialists, who can add economical and emotional value.

We invite you to visit Aura Galerías in Álvaro Obregón 10, Gallery District, Centro, Ejido del Centro, Baja California Sur, México; and in Atenas 30, Colonia Juárez, Delegación Cuauhtémoc, CP 06600, CDMX, you can also enter our online store where you can meet and acquire works by contemporary artists or communicate with our team at (55) 5282 5033 for more information about our exhibitions and works for sale from contemporary Mexican artists.
